Paul Auster, 4321

Best een beetje boeiend, leuk concept, mooi om individuele verhalen in de Amerikaanse jaren '60 te lezen, dus het was niet heel erg om de 1070 pagina's te lezen, maar na bladzijde vijfhonderd of zo voelde het toch als huiswerk. Te lang en te verwarrend en uiteindelijk vond ik het niet interessant meer welke Archie nou met wie seks had en wanneer. Teleurstellend dat het uiteindelijk alleen maar ging over de vraag of Ferguson nou schrijver werd in New York of in Parijs, of hij nou naar Princeton of Columbia ging, terwijl echte spannende vragen als hoe ga je om met het zwaard van Damocles van de dienstplicht of wat doet een verstoorde vader-zoonrelatie met iemand of welke impact hebben rassenrellen op een progressieve puber, nauwelijks zo zorgvuldig en uitvoerig worden uitgewerkt als de verliefdheid op Amy of die op Celia. Een homoseksuele Archie was gewoon ongeloofwaardig.

Toch zijn er prachtige momenten in het boek. "No, not at all, Amy said. Pangloss is an idiot optimist, and I'm an intelligent pessimist, meaning a pessimist who has occasional flashes of optimism. Nearly everything happens for the worst, but not always, you see, nothing is ever always, but I'm always expecting the worst, and when the worst doesn't happen, I get so excited I begin to sound like an optimist."

"and while all people were bound together by the common space they shared, their journeys through time were all different, which meant that each person lived in a slightly different world from everyone else."
